SEOUL, Dec. 12 (Yonhap) -- GM Korea's Chevrolet Trax was named the safest new car of the year in tests that evaluated 11 vehicle models released this year, the government said Thursday.
The small sport utility vehicle (SUV) Trax scored the highest, with 93.5 points out of 100 in the tests by the state-run Korea New Car Assessment Program (KNCAP), according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The KNCAP checks the safety of a vehicle in eight different categories, including a head-on crash, overturn and safety features of the vehicle, such as the existence of a forward collision warning system.
The 11 new vehicles tested this year included the Carens, a small multi-purpose vehicle by South Korea's Kia Motors Corp., which scored the second highest with 90.3 points, the ministry said. It was followed by the Max Cruise, a mid-sized SUV from Hyundai Motor Co., the country's largest automaker and an affiliate of Kia Motors.
Others were the Chevrolet Captiva from GM Korea, Kia's K3 compact passenger vehicle, the Avante Coupe and the Sonata HEV, both from Hyundai.
This year's test also included four imported vehicles -- the Nissan Cube, the BMW 520d, the Toyota Prius and the Tiguan from Volkswagen.
