Hyundai Motor-Brazil market

SEOUL, March 10 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's leading automaker, posted a record-high market share in Brazil in February thanks to strong sales of its subcompact passenger car that hit showrooms last year, industry data showed Sunday.

Hyundai Motor sold a total of 14,617 vehicles in the Brazilian market last month for a market share of 6.6 percent, up one notch from the previous month, according to the data by the Brazilian Automotive Industry Association.

The South Korean automaker boasted the fifth-highest market share last month. Italian automaker Fiat took the top spot with sales of 49,498 units, trailed by Volkswagen with 43,735, General Motors with 39,134 and Ford with 19,725.

Hyundai Motor had maintained the No. 5 market share since November.

In the first two months of this year, Hyundai Motor shipped 29,170 units, or 5.6 percent of the Brazilian market and the fifth-largest, according to the data.

Hyundai Motor's strong February sales were attributed to the popularity of its subcompact model, the HB20, which was launched in the Brazilian market in October last year. Hyundai sold 10,179 units of the HB20 in Brazil last month alone.

A Hyundai Motor official said the company is targeting to rank among the top five sellers in Brazil this year by introducing new HB20 models there.
