The Wire, Rio de Janeiro

First, the background: In less than a week, Allan Turnowski went from being the Rio de Janeiro chief of civil police to being indicted in a federal corruption investigation. Investigators say Turnowksi was caught on a wiretap tipping off police inspector about a pending corruption investigation. The inspector was arrested and charged for his role in an armed militia that controlled poor neighborhoods under threat of violence. Days later Turnowski stepped down after being questioned by federal investigators. The former chief has said he made a call to the inspector, but only to ask about a prisoner arrested in an unrelated operation.

Now the latest: O Globo reporter Antonio Werneck has been first in almost every development in the ongoing drama. And today he reports that the chief of police called the inspector not once, but five times on the day of the alleged tipoff. Werneck couldn’t find Turnowski for comment.
