Kenya News: Al Shabaab denies Nairobi bombing

NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya's internal security minister blamed Al Shabaab for a deadly grenade attack on a bus station in Nairobi, but in a press statement emailed to journalists on Monday from the Somali militants denied having anything to do with, "the turbulence that reigns over the country."

An Al Shabaab official in Somalia also denied responsibility. "We are not actually involved in such low-scale attacks. Al Shabaab has nothing to do with the hand grenade attacks that hit Nairobi," said Sheik Mohamed Ibrahim.
A man convicted of carrying out a similar style bombing last year was a Muslim convert from western Kenya — far from Somalia — who was not thought to have any formal links to the Al Qaeda-aligned militants.

It may be that Saturday's attack was similarly inspired, rather than ordered, by Al Shabaab but with Kenyan police releasing their only suspects — four people arrested on Monday — it may be sometime before those responsible are known and their motives become clear.
