Coldest War thaw? India-Pakistan talks resume on Siachen glacier

After a gap of three years, defence secretaries of India and Pakistan on Monday met in New Delhi to discuss a long-running dispute over the Siachen glacier, the Hindu reports.

Siachen is the world’s highest militarized zone, as India and Pakistan continue to dispute the proper location of the 110-km long Actual Ground Position Line (AGPL), which passes through the Soltoro Ridge and Siachen Glacier, the paper said.

The subject of sporadic skirmishes and at least one mid-scale war since 1984, Siachen glacier has cost more than 2,000 soldiers their lives–mostly due to the harsh terrain and the elements rather than shots fired in anger. Both India and Pakistan have bases at higher than 6,000 meters (or 20,000 feet).
