Delayed, toned down, and renamed "shameless walk," the Delhi Slut Walk turned out to be a damp squib, as only a few hundred participants turned up -- most of them men. Meanwhile, though the message of the march was clear -- and plastered on many signboards -- few women dared to dress the part. Most wore jeans and kurtas, though they carried placards with slogans like "My short skirt has nothing to do with you."
According to the Hindustan Times, organizer Mishika Singh said more than a thousand people attended the march -- including police personnel (who have repeatedly attributed the frequency of rape in the capital to women who go out alone and stay out too late). "I dont' believe the march was disapppointing at all," the paper quoted Singh as saying. "We are quite happy with the way it shaped up."
However, the paper quoted a senior police officer as telling a different story. "We believe there were 700 people, including spectators, about 400 police officers and 200 media persons," the officer said. In other words, that leaves only about 100 sluts...er shameless women.
