In a tragic real-life twist on O. Henry's "Gift of the Magi," a 12-year-old Indian girl killed herself to ensure that her father got the eye transplant he needed and her brother received a kidney he needed to save his life — but her body was cremated before the family discovered the suicide not expressing her intentions.

The  incident took place in a poor region of West Bengal on June 27, according to the Times of India, which reports that 12-year-old Mumpy Sarkar had been distraught over the ailments suffered by her father and brother, as well as the knowledge that the prospective cost of her own dowry was one of the main reasons that the family lacked the money for treatment.

Sarkar committed suicide by drinking pesticide, the article said.
