Nuclear plans in China move forward

In the face on ongoing potential leaks at nuclear plants in Japan following Friday's massive earthquakes, China says it has not plans to downsize its own nuclear power ambitions, Reuters reports.

China is in the midst of a large-scale nuclear power buildup, turning toward new generation nuclear plants as alternative, potential cleaner power sources as it seeks for ways to mitigate environmental impacts from coal burning — its number one power source. But on Monday, a senior government official said China won't be deterred from those plans by problems with Japan's nuclear plants in the wake of its 8.8-magnitude earthquake. The government is in the midst of constructing 40 nuclear power reactors, and Zhang Lijun, vice-environment minister, said Japan's disaster won't change plans here.
