Anne Hathaway has issued a bizarre apology for the Prada dress she wore to the Oscars.

Wearing the pale pink Prada number drew so much attention to Hathaway's nipples that they now have their own Twitter account, however that's not why the actress was apologizing.

Hathaway, who took home the gong for best supporting actress for her role in "Les Miserables," revealed that she was actually supposed to be wearing Valentino.

Her last minute decision to swap, she told People in a statement, was made after hearing the night before "that there would be a dress worn to the Oscars that is remarkably similar to the Valentino I had intended to wear."

Us quoted a source as saying the wearer in question was Hathaway's own co-star, Amanda Seyfried, who wore a white lace Alexander McQueen dress.

However, Hathaway's swap backfired when she ended up offending her longtime friend, Valentino Garavani, who reportedly custom-made Hathaway's wedding dress.

Vogue cited Valentino, who went on a skiing holiday with the actress and her husband over New Year, describing her as "like my daughter."

In the statement, she said she regretted "any disappointment caused," and:

"Though I love the dress I did wear, it was a difficult last minute decision as I had so looked forward to wearing Valentino in honor of the deep and meaningful relationship I have enjoyed with the house and with Valentino himself."

Meanwhile, MTV points out that even "wardrobe malfunction" jokes weren't enough to stop Hathaway from ranking on the website's list of best-dressed stars at the 2013 Academy Awards.

MTV Style wrote that Hathaways dress was "somehow simultaneously a nod to the '90s and still totally fresh."
