Cynthia Nixon and longtime girlfriend Christine Marinoni were married Sunday in New York City.

"On May 27, 2012, Cynthia Nixon and her girlfriend, Christine Marinoni, were legally married in the state of New York," Nixon's representative told PEOPLE magazine

According to The Daily Beast, Nixon proposed to Marinoni at a rally for same-sex marriage three years ago, before it was legal in New York.

Nixon, best known for her role as uptight lawyer Miranda in "Sex and the City," wore a custom dress by Carolina Herrera, reported the Detroit Free Press.

The actress, 46, and the education activist, 45, have been together since 2004, according to the Free Press. Marinoni gave birth to their son, Max Ellington Nixon-Marinoni, in February 2011. Nixon has two children from her previous relationship with photographer Danny Mozes: Samantha, 12, and Charlie, 6.

PEOPLE also reported that the couple decided to wait to get married until it was legal to do so in New York State.

"I'm enjoying being engaged very much," Nixon told PEOPLE in 2010. "I don't mind a long engagement, which this one is surely turning out to be."

Same-sex marriage became legal in New York State on June 23, 2011, according to the New York Daily News. The state Senate passed the bill by a 33-29 margin.

"This state, when it's at its finest, is a beacon for social justice," New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo said to the Daily News at the time. "We reached a new level of social justice this evening."
