Frontman Dave Grohl confirmed Tuesday what fans had been fearing: the Foo Fighters are taking a break.

In an open letter to fans on the band's Facebook page, Grohl called the Foo Fighters my life," but noted "it's a good thing for all of us to go away for a while."

Grohl told fans Saturday at the Global Citizen Festival in New York's Central Park that he didn't know when the band would play together again, and affirmed that in the letter, The Associated Press reported.

"Without making a big deal out of it, we don't have any shows after this. This is it, man," Metro quoted Grohl as saying. "Honestly, I don't know when we're gonna do it again…and this is the perfect place to do it."

According to MTV, Grohl started the Foo Fighters in 1994 after his stint as a drummer in Nirvana.

Since then, the band has won 11 Grammys, including five earlier this year.

Grohl told fans in his letter that he's now focused on a forthcoming Sound City documentary and album.
