Lady Gaga pledged $1 million in disaster relief to her hometown of New York City Wednesday, crediting the metropolis for shaping her into who she is.

"If it wasn't for NYC: the Lower Eastside, Harlem, the Bronx and Brooklyn, I would not be the woman or artist that I am today," Gaga wrote on her website. "Thank you for helping me build my spirit. I will now help you rebuild yours."

The funds will go to the Red Cross' relief efforts in the city, which is still recovering from the damage wrought by Hurricane Sandy.

"Hurricane Sandy's path of destruction stretched hundreds of miles and impacted millions of people and this will be one of the biggest Red Cross relief operations in the past five years," said Gail McGovern, president and CEO of the Red Cross, People Magazine reported

The charity has raised $103 million so far in the wake of Sandy, Agence France Presse reported

Gaga added that the donation was on behalf of her parents Joe and Cynthia, and her sister Natali, "with our deepest gratitude New York for raising us."

New York was slammed with another storm Wednesday, this time a Nor'easter bringing more high winds and snow.
