Les Miserables to return to Broadway

Following the success of the Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway film version, a new stage production of Les Miserables will open in New York in 2014.

A new stage version of Les Miserables will return to Broadway in March next year, thanks to the success of the Oscar-nominated film.

“What we’re counting on is that people who loved the movie will now really want to see ‘Les Misérables’ on stage, and people who loved the original musical were swept up by the film and say, ‘I can’t wait for another chance to see it onstage again,’” said veteran producer, Cameron Mackintosh, the New York Times reported.

The new version, which has been touring the United States for two years, will feature a markedly different set design and new music although familiar scores such as "On My Own" and "Bring Him Home" will remain, the New York Daily News reported.

The announcement comes in the lead-up to the Oscars on Sunday where Les Miserables is nominated for eight Academy Awards, including best picture, best actor (Hugh Jackman) and best supporting actress (Anne Hathaway).

Mackintosh said that while he did not plan to cast any movie stars, he would be happy for Hugh Jackman to make a week-long guest appearance.

“If Hugh said he wanted to do it for a week or two, that’d be fine by me,” he said. “But that’s not why we’re doing this. ‘Les Misérables’ is the star, the material is the star, and what you want to do is find star performances from people who want to be in it – like we had with the movie.”
