Actor Michael McKean, best known for his roles in "This is Spinal Tap" and "Laverne & Shirley," broke his leg Tuesday afternoon after he was struck by a car in Manhattan.

McKean, 64, was hit shortly before 3 p.m. while he was walking at West 86th Street and Broadway, according to the New York Post. He was rushed to St. Luke's Hospital where doctors checked for other broken bones.

"Hopefully, he'll be fine," said Harriet Sternberg, McKean's manager, to the Post. "He has sustained multiple injures and we are trying to find out the extent of other injuries."

McKean was set to star in Broadway's revival of Gore Vidal's "The Best Man," but producers had to scramble Wednesday to fill his place, reported the Associated Press. Producer Jeffrey Richards said the actor's role will now be played by James Lecesne.

"I understand from his team that he has never missed a performance in his career," Richards said of McKean, according to the AP. "So this is the kind of first we are reluctant to announce."

When news of the accident broke, fellow comedians sent messages of support for McKean on Twitter.

From Joel McHale: "Dear @MJMcKean, I heard the car lost. Good. So sorry about your accident. Get better quickly big guy."

And Patton Oswalt: "My hope that @MJMcKean has a speedy recovery goes to 11. #seriously"
