Three members of the Stone Temple Pilots released a statement Wednesday announcing lead singer Scott Weiland had been fired from the band.

"Stone Temple Pilots have announced they have officially terminated Scott Weiland," a publicist for guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz said in a short statement, reported the New York Daily News.

The termination, however, was news to Weiland.

"I learned of my supposed 'termination' from Stone Temple Pilots this morning by reading about it in the press," Weiland wrote in his own statement. "Not sure how I can be 'terminated' from a band that I founded, fronted and co-wrote many of its biggest hits, but that's something for the lawyers to figure out."

Stone Temple Pilots reformed in 2008 after taking a five-year break and touring through all of last year, according to Rolling Stone. The band hasn't said if it continues to carry on with a new singer.

Meanwhile, Weiland will carry on with his solo career and plans to go on tour through the US in March.

"In the meantime, I'm looking forward to seeing all my fans on my solo tour which starts this Friday," Weiland said.
