Seth McFarlane has been named as the host of the 85th annual Academy Awards in February.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made the announcement on Monday, with McFarlane responding in a statement:

"It's truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the Oscars. My thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don’t find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen Roast."

The Washington Post called McFarlane, creator of "Family Guy" and co-creator of "American Dad!" and "The Cleveland Show," an "unconventional, youth-friendly choice."

Most hosts have had a movie background, including Billy Crystal, Steve Martin, Whoopi Goldberg and more recently James Franco and Anne Hathaway.

McFarlane made his film directorial debut this year with "Ted," about a smart-mouthed, naughty minded teddy bear.

The film, starring Mark Wahlberg, made more than $420 million worldwide, according to the Washington Post.

Entertainment Weekly wrote that McFarlane proved himself "more than capable on live TV with a recent Saturday Night Live hosting gig, which in retrospect would seem to be a major part of this Academy Awards audition."

According to the Associated Press, McFarlane being invited to host the 2013 Academy Awards was "the greatest call that I could have gotten in show business."
