Day 1,141: The photo from Syria that says it all — blood splashed over a classroom floor

GlobalPost

Today is Day 1,141 of the Syrian conflict.

Different news organizations and activist groups have different death counts for the number killed yesterday when government aircraft dropped barrel bombs on an elementary school in Aleppo. The AP originally said, going by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights' estimate, "at least 19 people, including 10 children," while reporting the Aleppo Media Center's higher "25 killed, most of them children." The New York Times originally said "at least 20, including 17 students." CNN went with the opposition Local Coordination Committees of Syria's count of 25 children. And the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights' in its end-of-day roundup yesterday put the number at "20 people, including 17 children under the age of eighteen."

The central fact, however, that the bombs dropped by the regime hit a school with children in it, is undisputed.

A photo has come through from AFP showing one of the destroyed classrooms, blood on the floor and on discarded cloth.

As of this morning, the Syrian state news agency's website carried no mention of the attack, although it contained a story about a mortar shell fired by "terrorists," as the regime terms all rebels, hitting the roof of a private school in Damascus, injuring two teachers.

The conflict continues.
