528-pound Berlin woman names 13-pound baby "Jihad"

A 528-pound Berlin woman gave birth to a 13-pound baby boy — her fourth child over 11 pounds — without the help of a C-section, and perhaps appropriately named him "Jihad."

The child — the 40-year-old mother's 14th — set a new record for Germany's heaviest naturally born baby, news website The Local reported.

The Arabic word "jihad" translates as "struggle."

The mother had previously given birth to nine boys and four girls.

Doctors said the mother suffered from gestational diabetes and likely a metabolic disorder, as well. They said she was aware of her condition but still ate too much sweet food.

When advised to undergo a Caesarian section, she pushed for a natural delivery at Berlin's Charite hospital.

ABC News reported that:

While Jihad is a big boy, there are certainly some bigger babies who take the world title. In July, 16-pound Baby JaMichael was born in Texas. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Ann Bates of Canada gave birth to the biggest newborn, in 1879, when her baby weighed in at a whopping 23 pounds, 12 ounces.

Babies over 8.8 pounds (four kilograms) are judged overweight at birth.
