Norway's brutal killing spree by gunman Anders Breivik in 2011 will be the subject of a new musical.

The script was written by Scottish playwright David Greig, who visited the country three months after the mass murder.

Greig, who was commissioned to write "The Events" for the Actors Touring Company interviewed locals and relatives of the victims about how the massacre affected them.

"I was most interested in how Norwegian society was feeling," Greig told the Guardian.

"Oslo is not a huge city and everybody pretty much knows everybody else, so almost everyone we spoke to had been affected. Some people asked us not to write or talk about Breivik."

"I am not at all certain whether we give him a victory by ignoring him or trying to understand him. That is what I wanted to question."

The musical will not name Breivik and will relocate the massacre to Scotland.

It will focus on a woman who is dealing with the aftermath of the tragedy.

Breivik was sentenced to 22 years in prison for killing 77 people, mostly children, in Norway in July 2011.

The musical will begin this summer at Edinburgh's Traverse Theatre.
