Tom Maynard, a promising English cricket player, died Monday after being hit by a train on the London Underground. He was reportedly 23.
The Australian newspaper reported that Maynard may have been trying to evade police who wanted to question him about his "erratic" driving.
He may have been electrocuted as he crossed railway tracks near Wimbledon Park Station in South London, before being hit by a London Underground train at 5:10 a.m.
The BBC cited the police as saying that after police stopped a car being driven "erratically" at around 4:15 a.m. local time, a man fitting Maynard's description ran from the scene.
"The male driver of the vehicle — a black Mercedes C250 — made off on foot. Officers were unable to locate the man," a Metropolitan Police spokesman reportedly said.
"At approximately 05:10 BST the body of a man fitting the same description was found on tracks near Wimbledon Park station."

Britain's police watchdog, the Independent Police Complaints Commission, said it was considering investigating the incident.
Maynard's cricket team, Surrey, announced his death, but didn’t disclose the cause.
The Guardian described Maynard as a cricketer of "prodigious talent" who might have one day represented England.
As a mark of respect, the English side canceled a press conference ahead of a one-day international match against the West Indies at The Oval, Surrey's home ground, the Guardian reported.
As tributes poured in from cricket fans and players, Maynard's girlfriend, underwear model Carly Baker, took to Twitter to pay tribute to her "special man."
