Jovan Belcher, the Kansas City Chiefs linebacker who killed his girlfriend on the weekend, made the sign of the cross before kneeling behind a parked vehicle and shooting himself in the head.

That, and other details of the crime, are filtering out as police continue to investigate and the NFL team attempts to find answers.

In an exclusive report published online today, The Kansas City Star said Belcher kissed Kasandra Perkins’ lifeless body and apologized after he shot her Saturday morning.

“He cared about her,” police Sgt. Richard Sharp told the newspaper.

“I don’t think he could live with himself.”

Belcher, 25, and Perkins had a 3-month-old daughter together.

After killing Perkins, he drove to Arrowhead Stadium where GM Scott Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel tried to intervene.

Instead, Belcher told them “I have to do this” before taking his own life. Perkins and Belcher had fought before, according to media.

Deadspin.com also reported Belcher used prescription drugs and alcohol heavily and might have been suffering concussions problems.

In the early morning leading up to the shooting, Belcher slept in his black Bentley outside another woman’s house, The Associated Press said.

Police happened upon him, but had no reason to worry. Belcher went into a woman’s apartment after making a phone call, the AP said.

The Chiefs were aware of Belcher’s domestic issues, and had tried to help by offering the couple counselling.

Belcher’s mother is now caring for the couple’s daughter.

Perkins met Belcher through her cousin, who is married to Chiefs’ running back Jamal Charles.

“As my actual family and my Kansas City Chiefs family have been altered forever, we ask that you keep us and most importantly their child in prayer,” a statement from Charles said.
