Tour de France: Not the yellow jersey you want

In France, Mark Cavendish is not No. 1.

It sounds like the ultimate protest against cycling’s drug culture, but apparently that isn’t why a fan doused the British rider with urine on Wednesday during the Tour de France.

Competitor Jerome Pineau broke the news on Twitter, saying he was “ashamed” by supporters lining the race route.

“Yesterday I was so proud to see the support at the race, but today I am ashamed,” Pineau said, according to Sky News.

“Ashamed when my friend @MarkCavendish tells me he has been whistled and even sprayed with urine on the course. It’s scandalous.”

The yellow act was apparently in response to a crash on Tuesday in which many blamed Cavendish for spilling Tom Veelers near the finish.

Cavendish was cleared of wrongdoing. He had a more upbeat attitude about his golden shower later on Wednesday.

Also on Twitter, Cavendish wrote he’s passing on the “apple juice.”

One man who knows a lot about urine and the Tour de France is Lance Armstrong, and he wasn’t shocked or ashamed by Wednesday’s turn of events.

He tweeted earlier (although it appears to have been taken down) that passion spilling from fans is nothing new.

“Why all the sudden shock and outrage,” Armstrong said, according to USA Today. “This has been happening for 100 years in some form or another. piss, spit, fists, etc.”

As for Cavendish, it's go time now, although Wednesday's unfortunate incident is probably as close to the yellow jersey as he'll come.

The UK's Christopher Froome leads the competition while Cavendish was 149th place after Stage 11.
