The US women's soccer team vanquished Canada in dramatic fashion, winning the 4-3 shoot out and advancing to the gold medal round.

The US's Alex Morgan, who had not scored since the opening match against France, earned the spotlight with a towering header in the final minutes of the game.

"It was a crazy battle," Morgan said after the match, according to ABC News

Canada’s Christine Sinclair's put up an impressive performance, but her hat trick could not propel Canada to victory.

America’s Abby Wambach converted a late penalty to tie the game at 3-3 in the 80th minute.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Sinclair and Wambach have now both scored 143 career goals for their respective nations. Yet both are behind the legendary Mia Hamm, who remains the record goal scorer with 158 international goals.

After regulation time it was anyone's game. In extra time both teams failed to convert a number of chances. Shots went high and there are probably a few dents in the woodwork.

If the US can overcome Japan in the finals it will be their third consecutive gold medal. The US has won gold in Atlanta, Athens and Beijing.

The women have reached the Summer Olympic finals every year since 1996–when women's soccer was introduced, according to FOX

The US lost to Japan on penalty kicks in last year's World Cup. Let's hope their rematch is as good as this one.
