Libya says women's soccer team can't play tournament due to Ramadan

Yet, national women's soccer team a lightning rod for religious extremists in Libya.

Saying it cannot allow its national women’s soccer team to play during Ramadan, Libya has withdrawn from an important international tournament in Germany this weekend.

Given that the team has attracted unwanted attention from religious extremists, however, that might only be a half-truth.

The Libyan federation isn’t allowing the women to play because during the holy month, Muslims are supposed to fast from early dawn to sunset.

It sounds like the ultimate protest against cycling’s drug culture, but apparently that isn’t why a fan doused the British rider with urine on Wednesday during the Tour de France.

Competitor Jerome Pineau broke the news on Twitter, saying he was “ashamed” by supporters lining the race route.
