Zapiro removes Zuma's showerhead ... for now.

Zapiro — South Africa's lively and controversial cartoonist is back in the headlines. This time because he is giving new president Jacob Zuma a break.

Zapiro — aka Jonathan Shapiro — has gained fame and notoriety for having South Africa's sharpest drawing pen, which he wields in the Sunday Times and the Times. Zapiro has famously lampooned Zuma by portraying him with a showerhead attached to his head — a graphic, satirical reference to Zuma's testimony in court that he protected himself from AIDS by taking a shower after having unprotected sex with a woman he knew was HIV positive. Zapiro's showerhead made Zuma look like a dunderhead.

Following Zuma's inauguration as South Africa's fourth black president, Zapiro has decided to give the politician the benefit of the doubt and has removed the showerhead. It's not on Zuma's head, but sometimes it hovers nearby.

Watch this space to keep track of Zapiro's depictions of Zuma.
