By decree, transsexuality is no longer a mental illness
The French Ministry of Health has announced that transsexuality will no longer be considered a mental illness.
LGBT activists lauded Saturday’s announcement on the eve of the International Day Against Homophobia — the theme of which this year focused on transphobia — saying that the declassification was a step forward in the fight against the discrimination and violence committed against the transgender community.
Currently, transsexuals are exempt from some medical fees when treated for “recurrent or persistent disorders,” often associated with having psychiatric problems, according to a ministry spokesman. With the declassification, those seeking treatment related to gender identity issues will continue to benefit from the subsidy but without the associated stigma.
