Was the daughter of Kiev's mayor robbed or not?

More than 4 million euros in jewelry is the amount a suspected robber allegedly made off with during a smash and grab on a highway north of Paris. The victim was the daughter of Kiev’s mayor. Even more incredible, the robber apparently dropped about $10,000 in stolen cash while trying to escape.

Various news sources including the Associated Press and the online edition of Le Parisien newspaper reported the details of the incident, which allegedly took place Monday when Leonid Chernovetsky’s daughter, Kristina, was in transit through Paris. During her layover at Charles de Gaulle airport, she hired a luxury car to go into the city for some shopping, one news report said. While she and the driver were stuck in traffic, the suspect reportedly smashed the Mercedes’ window and grabbed her purse with the jewelry inside, according to news sources citing police. The driver ran after the robber who apparently dropped the large sum of money during the chase but was not caught.

Later in the day, however, a report from Agence France Presse posted on the website of Le Figaro newspaper reported that the mayor’s office in the Ukraine denied that the incident happened. An advisor to Chernovetsky was quoted as saying that “nothing has happened to Kristina,” and that she has been in Kiev all along.

Chernovetsky once headed one of the country’s largest banks before being elected mayor two years ago, according to the AFP report, which stated that his family has been criticized in the past for their lavish tastes.
