Why steal an Irish passport?

This Irish Times article hit too close to home for Tom Hayes, who recently spoke to GlobalPost for a story on in-flight theft about losing his passport during a flight from Chicago to Brussels.

“So that’s why someone might want to take an Irish passport,” Hayes wrote in an email message after reading about suspected hit-men allegedly using fake passports with valid passport numbers belonging to European citizens in the assassination of a senior Hamas leader in a Dubai hotel last month.

Hayes’ Irish passport, which disappeared after a flight attendant placed it in a closet in the business class cabin during his trans-Atlantic flight, was not one of the ones forged and used in the Dubai killing.

France, Britain and Ireland are seeking an explanation from Israel over the matter, which has raised diplomatic tensions amid speculation that Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, was involved in the operation.
