Recycling debate at the happiest place on earth

While the COP15 battles it out with lots of politics and little notable progress during the first week, I’m vacationing at the happiest place on earth and have had a bit of an environmental debate of my own.

During my trip to Disney World, I found myself with an aluminum can in hand and no recycling bin in sight. Throughout my time at Animal Kingdom, the park took every opportunity to preach environmental conscientious. But, with a whole day ahead of me, I was forced to begrudgingly throw my can in a regular trash bin.

Thinking Disney didn't practice what it preaches, I got online to discover otherwise. Disney has its own landfills and recycling systems; the conglomerate sorts through its trash to separate the recyclables. It just doesn't expect guests to do the same.

There are a couple things wrong with this picture. Nowhere, on any trash bins was the recycling policy outlined. Guests are left to think that all of their waste will be en route to a landfill. Disney also isn't helping new generations learn and acquire recycling practices.

With this in mind, we’ll further analyze Disney’s award-winning recycling strategies on this blog next week. Consider this food for thought in the meantime.
