How truly innovative Disney’s recycling program is remains an open question. Some believe that Disney’s garbage cans are so magical that they are connected to a pipe system that sorts and separates waste from recyclables. In reality, as I discovered after a visit to the happiest place on earth last week, it is impressive but isn’t so “smoke and mirrors.”
As you’ll recall from my blog post last week, Disney only provides one type of receptacle for visitors to dispose of their waste. But they do open and sort through individual trash bags and send recyclables to an onsite plant. Their theory is that in doing the sorting themselves, there’s a better chance for accuracy.
In order to become an environmental leader, Disney is also working on developing their own biofuels from the cooking oil waste generated by the parks and cruise lines. Plus, they’re making a switch to reduced or zero emissions vehicles.
Disney’s positive progress is inarguable, but is it enough to offset their impact?
