Is online shopping really a green alternative?

Many people have the conception that online shopping is a convenient, green alternative. This holiday season, you might be a shopper that relied upon this ideology. But, the concept that online shopping is eco-friendly might not be as black and white as you thought.

In some ways, online shopping is more ecologically beneficial than taking a trip to the mall. But in others, it can take a greater toll so it’s important to look at things from every angle. Online shopping prevails in carbon reduction, producing less C02 than a car ride to the store. Van delivery from online ordering produces an estimated 180g; 24 times less than a shopping trip.

Online shopping warehouses also reduce urban sprawl since one centralized warehouse limits construction needs when compared to building multiple retail locations in various communities. Where online shopping loses the green battle is with their packaging. Though many retailers are moving to recyclable or reclaimed packaging, the need for boxes and protective materials for shipping does create waste.

You can pat yourself on the back if you did your holiday shopping online this year. But by recognizing that even the greener method could stand to see some improvement, you can urge retailers to make their already green processes even better!
