Global Green Guide: What green car buyers should know before shopping

Most car manufacturers have come out with at least one vehicle that they market as green, meaning there are plenty of choices for consumers. But, the selection can be overwhelming for those who aren’t sure how to shop for a green car or choose one that's right their lifestyle.

Whether you’re looking to buy a green vehicle today, or later down the road, you’ll benefit from these guidelines.

1. Know the difference between electric and hybrid cars

The two major classifications of green cars are electric and hybrid. Electric vehicles rely solely upon plug-in power, which often means that the travel range may not be as extensive as hybrid cars. Hybrid cars combine electric power and gasoline which allows for reserve power.

2. Consider where you’ll be driving

Electric vehicles are great commuter cars. It’s important to get an understanding of just how long the vehicle can hold a charge (based on mileage) and the distance you have to drive daily. Depending upon where you live, you may find charging stations are highly accessible, but others aren’t there yet. If you find an electric vehicle isn’t realistic for you, a hybrid vehicle might be a better option.

3. Find out if gas is used during charging

Some electric vehicles actually use gas during charging, so some emissions are released.

4. Test drive

Like any car, choosing a green vehicle depends upon personal choice after you've sussed out the technical details. Find a car that’s comfortable and practical for where you plan to drive it!
