The British government has said it will reestablish contacts with Hezbollah's political wing.
"Our objective with Hezbollah remains to encourage them to move away from violence and play a constructive, democratic and peaceful role in Lebanese politics, in line with a range of UN Security Council Resolutions," a foreign office spokesman told the BBC.
Hezbollah has welcomed the development.
At the same time, two U.S. envoys arrived in Damascus to begin the highest level talks with the Syrian government since the American ambassador was withdrawn in 2005.
Both officials stopped off in Lebanon on Thursday to reassure the U.S.-backed March 14 movement that "the United States' support for a sovereign and independent Lebanon remains unwavering," Jeffrey D. Feltman, acting assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs, told a news conference.
In another sign of thawing relations, the United States has also invited Iran to a summit on security in Afghanistan.
