News DeskJuly 5, 2009 10:00Iran has released Greek journalist Iason Athanasiadis, a GlobalPost correspondent, who was jailed for two weeks, according to reports on Iran's State TV and confirmed by Greek diplomats on Sunday afternoon.
"We are thrilled with the now-confirmed news of Iason's release," said GlobalPost Executive Editor Charles M. Sennott. "We applaud the diligence of the Committee to Protect Journalists and the concern and good efforts of his family, friends and the news organizations like ours for which Iason was writing while he was in Iran.
"Sadly, there are still more than 35 other journalists being held by Iran in the wake of its crackdown on the media. None of us will rest, particularly not Iason and definitely not the CPJ, until they are released as well."
The work of Athanasiadis and his involvement with GlobalPost is described by Sennott in "Thinking of Iason and freedom on Independence Day" in his GroundTruth blog.
Athanasiadis wrote "Farewell to Tehran" just before he was arrested by Iranian authorities at the airport. Other dispatches by Athanasiadis include: "Unrest continues in Iran" and "Iran's elections: A view from the highway."
