On April 5, Foley and three other journalists came under attack on the front line near Brega, Libya. Among the group, South African photographer Anton Hammerl was shot and left in the desert. Forces loyal to Col. Muammar Gaddafi seized the other three journalists and detained them in Sirte and Tripoli.
