Niall Ferguson: the long view

Financial historian Niall Ferguson analyzes the post-crisis world order for Passport: "China is rapidly mutating into something more like an empire than we’ve seen in a long time. The big question is, at what point does China become a strategic rival to the U.S.?"

Niall Ferguson is the best-selling author of Empire: The Rise and Demise of the British World Order and the Lessons for Global Power, and more recently The War of the World: Twentieth Century Conflict and the Descent of the West.

He is a contributing editor of the Financial Times, and a professor at Harvard. In 2004, Time magazine named him one of the hundred most influential people in the world.

In an exclusive interview conducted at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, Passport's Mark Scheffler spoke with Ferguson about the financial meltdown, the West's waning influence, and what the world will look like when it emerges from the economic crisis.
