2011 marks the 50th anniversary for Peace Corps. Events and celebrations have been held around the nation for one of the most successful government service programs.
President John F. Kennedy, then a presidential candidate, addressed a crowd of students at the University of Michigan on October 14, 1960, in an impromptu speech at 2am, urging them to serve the world. This speech was the beginning of the formation of Peace Corps, though the program became official with the signing of Presidential Order 10924 in March, 1961.
