BEIJING, China — Chinese artist Ai Weiwei was released on bail by the Beijing police, for his "good attitude in confessing." Ai was arrested at Beijing's airport on April 3, after both U.S. and European officials had repeatedly called for his release, reported MSNBC.
Ai's imprisonment occured during a government crackdown on political dissidents, which included the arrests of activists, writers and religious leaders. Police claimed that Ai's company, Bejing Cultural Development Ltd., evaded taxes. Ai has stated that he would be willing to pay the government, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Ai designed the Bird's Nest Olympic stadium for the 2008 summer games in Beijing, and his piece "Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads" is currently on display in New York City's Central Park.
