Friday, December 28th, 2012

Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, more commonly known as Stormin' Norman, died Thursday at 78.

More from GlobalPost: Gen. H. Norman 'Stormin’ Norman' Schwarzkopf dies at 78

GlobalPost's Samantha Stainburn previously reported on the death of the general who commanded Operation Desert Storm in 1991. According to The New York Times, he died due to complications from pneumonia.

Schwarzkopf may have been given his nickname because of his curt nature, but a look back at his life and career in pictures shows  that he wasn't always as abrupt as his reputation led the public to believe.

Iraq's invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990, ostensibly over violations of the Iraqi border, led to the Gulf War, which began January 16, 1991. A US-led multi-national force repulsed Iraq from Kuwait during the 'Desert Storm' offensive and a cease-fire was signed February 28, 1991.

Bush and Democratic challenger John Kerry scrambled for votes in the key states of Florida and Ohio, keeping a bruising pace on the campaign trail in a race still too close to call with less than 48 hours until election day. Two tracking polls by The Washington Post and Fox television showed the candidates have evenly split the electorate, with little apparent change since the emergence of a video by al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
