American soldiers take cover in a ditch near the town of Sauveur-le-Vicomte during the invasion of Normandy, France during Operation Overload. American forces stormed the beaches at Normandy on June 6, 1944, a day that would be later called D-Day. This military endeavor that resulted in many casualties, but proved critical in the success of the allies during WWII.
