Spanish housing boom amid crisis 2012 10 15

During the boom years, where in its peak Spain built some 800,000 houses a year, more than Britain, Germany and France combined, and millions of wooden doors where needed, the people of Villacanas were part of a proud elite enjoying high wages and permanent jobs. Almost all of those doors used came from this small industrial town in the La Mancha province, some seven million a year, leaving with truck loads at the same time, from the now empty and silent Villacanas industrial park. With Spain in recession and the housing bubble busted, the door industry is shattered and unemployment in Villacanas, zero for nearly a generation, is rising fast.
