iller whales are trapped in floating ice off the town of Rausu on Shiretoko Peninsula facing the Nemuro Strait, some 1,050 kilometres (650 miles) northeast of Tokyo, in February 2005. Eleven killer whales were declared dead and one female whale, though seriously hurt, broke through the ice and returned to the Pacific.
