Oct. 6, 2007 - Sunni women and children leave their residences in the al Arasa neighborhood of Muqdadiyah, Diyala province, Iraq. Muqdadiyah is a stronghold of al Qaeda in Iraq. Recent attacks on al Arasa by al Qaeda and by Jaish al-Mahdi (JAM) a Shia militia controlled by Muqtada al Sadr, have left the town in ruins. A new initiative by the US seeks to recruit and pay local Sunni Arabs to protect neighborhoods throughout a large portion of central Iraq.
