Were media right to keep US drone base secret?

At the request of the Obama administration, several mainstream news organizations — including The Washington Post and The New York Times — agreed not to report the existence of a secret drone base in Saudi Arabia. The administration said the news could undermine the hunt for Al Qaeda operatives in neighboring Yemen. It was a drone launched from the Saudi base that in 2011 killed Al Qaeda operative, and American citizen, Anwar al-Awlaki. The news outlets have known about the base for more than a year. Should they have reported the story sooner?
