The US has yet to retract its commitment to provide $1 billion in annual aid to Egypt, despite an escalating, brutal crackdown by the Egyptian military on protests throughout the country. While the situation is being "reviewed," hundreds of civilians are killed.
Limited measures have been taken: a shipment from the US of four F-16 aircraft to Egypt was halted, and joint military exercises scheduled for next month between the US and Egypt are canceled. Still, the White Houses' decision not to define the Egyptian military takeover as a "coup" means that aid will continue to be sent.
