BEIRUT — A group of US senators have warned that Egypt's crackdown on non-governmental organizations (NGOs) is threatening the decades of warm relations the two countries have enjoyed. In a statement, they warned that that Congress-approved support "including financial assistance" was jeopardized by recent moves.
BEIRUT — A European Union official has said the member states plan to enact harsher sanctions on Syria in response to the violent conflict that is sweeping the country. The proposals include a ban on flights to and from Syria, and a ban on the importation of precious minerals and phosphates.
BEIRUT — The Gulf Cooperation Council announced Tuesday it was withdrawing its ambassadors from Syria and sending Syria's ambassadors home. The GCC is comprised of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Qatar. The GCC said, "Nearly a year into the crisis, there is no glint of hope in a solution."
BEIRUT — The hacker group calling itself "Anonymous" posted the passwords and email addresses of scores of Syrian government officials. Many of the officials' passwords would have not passed a simple security test: "12345." In one, a UN attaché coaches al-Assad on how to respond to questions in an ABC news interview.
BEIRUT — Seventeen staff members, including ambassador Robert Ford, have left the country. In a statement, the Department of State said Robert Ford remained "the United States Ambassador to Syria and its people."
