Egypt election: Shafiq victory leads to violence

CAIRO, Egypt — Egyptian protesters set fire Monday night to the campaign headquarters of Ahmed Shafiq, the controversial presidential contender and former minister, following the official announcement of Egypt’s first round of presidential elections in Cairo. Campaigning on law and order and a heavy-handed crackdown on anti-regime protesters, Shafiq secured a surprising second place, setting the stage for a run-off between the Mubarak holdover and the Muslim Brotherhood candidate, Mohamed Morsi.
