Why is China's navy preparing for combat?

At President Hu's urging, it's all in the name of world peace.

President Hu Jintao on Tuesday urged China's navy to prepare for combat, according to news reports.

Speaking to the Central Military Commission in Beijing, Hu said the navy should:

 ... accelerate its transformation and modernization in a sturdy way, and make extended preparations for military combat in order to make greater contributions to safeguard national security and world peace ...

What's China building in the Gobi desert?

Google Earth spotted huge, unidentified structures in the Gobi desert. Gulp.

This is pretty bonkers. 

According to a news report, there are enormous and totally terrifying-looking structures in the middle of the Gobi desert that nobody has any idea about.
