Zimbabwe prisoners need 'sex gadgets' to curb urges, senator says

Sithembile Mlotshwa told a parliamentary committee that prisoners can go without food and clothing as long as they satisfy their sexual needs, and should be given "sex gadgets" to "curb homosexuality."

JOHANNESBURG — A Zimbabwean senator has called for prison inmates to be provided with sex gadgets for "when the desire arises," to prevent them from "spreading" homosexuality.

Sithembile Mlotshwa, a senator from Matobo, Zimbabwe, told a parliamentary committee Monday that prisoners can go without food and clothing as long as they satisfy their sexual needs, the state-run Herald newspaper reported.

In Zimbabwe, prison conditions are notoriously terrible, and many prisoners never make it out alive. A 2009 documentary aired on South African television showed emaciated prisoners living in "death camp"-like conditions.

According to the Herald, Mlotshwa "urged the government to forgo clothes and food and provide 'sex gadgets' in prisons to curb homosexuality."

“Considering that some of the same-sex orientation (homosexuality) come from prisons and when those people are out they then spread that orientation, what measures are you putting in place to make sure that vice is stopped?” she asked the Committee on Gender and Development.

“In other countries they provide sex gadgets and they have also constructed rooms where people go and service themselves when the desire arises,” she said.

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is notoriously anti-gay. His rants about homosexuality have for years been a staple of his public speeches, and gays and lesbians have faced serious political repression under his rule.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Ahead of the ruling African National Congress party's big 100-year anniversary bash earlier this month, more than a million condoms were distributed to hotels, bars and restaurants in anticipation of wild times by ANC cadres.

But after complaints that the Choice brand condoms were leaky, South African health authorities have announced a recall.

This means 1.35 million condoms that had been cleared by the South Africa Bureau of Standards are being withdrawn.

A leading activist group, Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), said it heard complaints about porous condoms, and condoms that burst during sex, Johannesburg newspaper City Press reported.

Or as the City Press headline said: "ANC party centenary condoms filled with ‘pricks’."

While the condoms have yet to be subjected to lab tests, the Free State health department decided to be proactive and recall the entire batch of 8,700 boxes.

“There is no reason for people to panic,” spokesperson Jabu Mbalula told City Press.

Prince Harry, posted to the town of Gila Bend, Arizona, for military training, has been warned against "fornicating" during his stay in the Christian community — at least according to a report in a scandal-loving British tabloid.

The 27-year-old prince is in Gila Bend, population 1,700, for the final stage of an advanced weapons training course in the United States, to experience conditions similar to those he might encounter in Afghanistan. Prince Harry is a helicopter pilot in the British Army.

But the town's mayor, Ron Henry, in an interview with the Daily Mail warned Harry off the Arizona desert town's young women after hearing about his reputation as a party-loving playboy, the tabloid claimed.

"There are probably some fathers here who would go to extremes to protect their daughters," said Mayor Henry, the Daily Mail reported. "Some of the dads won't take too kindly to a prince fornicating the night away."

The mayor added: "I would advise the prince to take in the beautiful sights of the desert instead."

Prince Harry was previously posted at El Centro base in California as part of the RAF Apache training course. While in California, he is reported to have wooed San Diego cocktail waitress Jess Donaldson.

South African sports minister in TMI sex scandal

The details of Fikile Mbalula's sex life were laid out in South Africa's Sunday papers, complete with an overly detailed explanation from Mbalula, sparking a backlash from readers.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — In a case of TMI, the graphic details of South African sports minister Fikile Mbalula's sex life were spread over the front pages of this country's Sunday newspapers.

But rather than sparking calls for his resignation, the lurid reports drew support for Mbalula, with Twitter users in South Africa saying his sex life was "not news," and the ruling party's youth league praising his courage, as well as his "energy and oomph."

Mbalula, who is married, allegedly impregnated a 27-year-old model during a one-stand stand after they met at a party in Johannesburg, the Sunday World tabloid says. The woman then tried to extort money from him, according to reports.

The model declined to comment. But Mbalula, 40, admitted that he had a brief relationship with her, telling the newspaper:

"She has told me that she will go public and say I have not used a condom when I slept with her and that I was cheating on my wife with her," he said.

"The truth is that I used a condom with her, but it burst during sex."

Media reports of the affair then go into the lengthy deliberations of how to handle the burst condom. According to Mbalula, the woman had promised take a morning-after pill, but later told him she was pregnant and asked for R2,000 ($250) for an abortion — and then for R10,000 ($1,240), and then for R40,000 ($4,950).

Mbalula, who is a former leader of the ruling African National Congress party's youth league, apologized "to the South African society, to the African National Congress and the South African government."

"I have apologized to my family, particularly to my wife, as I should have known better," he said, the South African Press Association reports.

The ANC youth league on Monday released a statement saying it "accepts the apology of Comrade Fikile Mbalula!"
