How Kate Middleton saved pantyhose with The Duchess Effect

The Duchess Effect is one of 2012's most popular buzzwords.

Kate Middleton isn't known for being flashy.

You won't see her wearing something out of Lady Gaga's closet, or even sporting stilettos that have over a three-inch heel. Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, may not be what many in the fashion world consider "fashion forward." However, even without the fashion moniker, she has single handedly breathed life into brands like Jenny Packham and Temperly. She is even credited with the return of pantyhose.

According to the annual analysis by the Global Language Monitor (GLM), the term "The Duchess Effect" is sitting atop the Fashion Buzzword List for the second year in a row. Proof that Kate doesn't have to be over the top to matter in fashion.

GLM's Manhattan-based Fashion Director, Bekka Payack, says of the buzzword:

“The Duchess Effect appears to extend much further than the economic impact of Kate’s fashion choices; this year the fashion landscape seems to be a brighter, more accessible place with the styles more colorful, feminine and graceful than we’ve observed in many years. Fashion is now being influenced from all points on the globe, with the rise of the regional fashion centers driving tribal, sustainable and eco-based trends."

Part of Kate's charm, as Payack points out, is her accessible wardrobe. A great example of The Dutchess Effect, defined by GLM as, "The positive economic impact of Kate Middleton’s fashion choices, derived from her new title, ‘the Duchess of Cambridge,'" is evident in the bottom line of mid-range line Reiss. After Kate began wearing the line to several events, including a white shift dress by the brand in her engagement photos, Reiss' profit margin doubled, going from £4.3 million to £8.5 million ($6.7 million to $13.2 million) in 2011.

Beyond the help Kate has given to retail, she has helped shape a new style for women around the world. Kate has played a part in bringing back lady-like fashion. Women emulate her look by wearing longer dresses (the midi length dress is one of Spring 2012's hottest looks), preppy style and ultra feminine prints.

15 Kate Middleton memorable moments in 2011

This was a big year for Kate Middleton. Wedding, honeymoon, Royal Christmas. Discuss.

If there is one thing all of these end-of-year lists agree upon, it's that 2011 has been a big and momentous year for news. We've had more than our fair share of revolutions, toppled dictators, dead public figures, scandals and expensive natural disasters.

With all these world-changing events, it can be easy to forget that this has also been an important year for one young lady: Kate Middleton.

Here are some of the highlights in the Year of Kate, who is now known as the Duchess of Cambridge.

Wedding preparation

A typical American wedding takes months of preparations and tens of thousands of dollars. Kate's wedding to Prince William took wedding prep to an entirely new level. Private businesses got involved and made everything from jelly beans with their faces to Pez dispensers looking like the couple.

Wedding fans

Perhaps as entertaining as the Royal wedding itself were the wedding super-fans who flocked to Buckingham Palace to get a glimpse of the activity. Here are interviews with them. And here are photos of the fans.

Wedding dress

With every bride-to-be and fashionista following what Kate would wear at her wedding, there was a tad bit of pressure for her to look stunning. Kate's dress was designed by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen's fashion house, and she looked gorgeous.

Wedding ceremony

It was beautiful.

The kiss

Fitting for a princess.

Frowning bridesmaid

An image of an adorable — frowning — young bridesmaid, Prince William's goddaughter, 3-year-old Grace van Cutsem, became one of the iconic photographs of the Royal wedding.

Honeymoon

Kate and Will went on their honeymoon in Seychelles, an island chain in the Indian Ocean.

Dress visitors

Kate's wedding dress later went on display at Buckingham Palace and attracted a record number of visitors to the palace.

Marilyn Monroe mishap

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and the former Kate Middleton, went on a 12-day visit to North America. Throughout their trip, they dressed perfectly for each occasion. But Kate wasn't prepared for one thing: the Canadian wind. Just minutes after arriving in Calgary, Canada, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were greeted by gusts of wind that blew up Kate's dress and gave her the "Marilyn Monroe effect."

LA kiss

They wrapped up their trip with a visit to Los Angeles, Calif., where they rubbed elbows with celebrities and wrapped their arms around the inner city youth, taking in a full range of life in California. They also exchanged a rare public kiss after William's team won a polo challenge in Santa Barbara.

Summer hats

In her new role as Duchess of Cambridge, Kate fashioned the hat in nearly every way possible this summer, ranging from a white cowboy hat in Calgary, Canada to a white brim hat at a royal family wedding in Scotland.
